The Beast's Summer Hiking Guide

Two hikers walk along a wooden bridge through a forested mountain landscape.

Killington Resort is becoming known all over the world for its mountain biking terrain, but for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground or are just looking to slow down for a few hours, The Beast also offers a network of hiking trails. Whether you’re after a 20-minute jaunt around the beautiful Snowshed Pond, or a grueling hours-long climb to the summit, our marked trails offer something for everyone. With varied terrain mixing grassy ski trails, work roads, and well-worn paths through the forest, you’ll never tire of exploring, and all trails to the summit culminate with breathtaking views of the Green Mountains.

Before setting out, it’s a good idea to prepare yourself with knowledge of some of the natural hazards that exist. Poisonous plants such as wild parsnip, poison ivy and giant hogweed are common on the mountain. You’ll also want to put on bug spray to avoid biting insects and sunblock to protect yourself from the hot summer rays. Sturdy footwear is a must, and on longer hikes, it is advisable to bring water and stay hydrated. Also, please be aware that many of our hiking trails are shared with mountain bikers, so look both ways at crossings and stay on the sides of the trails when possible. If you are hiking alone, it is a good idea to let friends and family know where you will be. You should also refer to our Mountain Report for any trail closings or other current updates.

THE TRAILS

A Trail aka Flume

1.1 Miles; 1,640 vertical Ft

For the serious hiker, A trail is the most direct route to the Killington Peak, following the K-1 Gondola up Flume and Cascade ski trails. It is steep and rugged, but a necessary notch on the belt of any serious Green Mountain “peak bagger.” Once you reach the top, you can enjoy 360-degree scenic vistas or a well-deserved beverage at the stunning Peak Lodge. To get back down, it is recommended to take a more winding C or E trail (or perhaps a gondola ride to the base – download only tickets are available on days the gondola is running.)

B Trail aka Canyon Loop

1.2 miles; 280 vertical ft

This easier loop beginning at the K-1 Lodge takes you through the Canyons area of the resort and past the headwaters of the Roaring Brook. A combination of work roads, grassy ski trails and wooded stretches make this trail ideal for a walk to commune with nature.

C Trail aka Warbler

2.0 miles; 1640 vertical ft

This is a moderately difficult hike winding across the ski trails of Snowdon Peak before connecting with the loop to the top of Killington Peak. It follows a well-used work road, offering a wide-open trail, but one that is shared with mountain bikers and work vehicles.

E Trail aka Wildlands

2.2 Miles; 1,640 vertical ft

A true wilderness experience, this winding nature walk takes you from the K-1 lodge and across many ski trails offering incredible views of the surrounding mountains. This is a moderate hike, with varied terrain, which will eventually lead you to the Killington Peak.

F Trail aka Alpine

1.2 Miles; 220 vertical ft

An alternate route from the upper section of E trail, this open trail follows ski trails to the top of Skye Peak for glorious Green Mountain views, before looping back towards E Trail for the final ascent to Killington Peak.

H Trail aka Moraine

1.3 Miles; 580 vertical ft

Take off from the Grand Hotel or the bottom of the Snowshed Express Quad on this meandering, wooded trail. It’s a gentle 1.3-mile hike through varied forest and fields, that connects with S trail – this will drop you at the base of Superstar Express Quad – or E trail, where you’ll have the choice to continue your climb up Skye Peak or cut back across to the K-1 base area.

I Trail aka Pond Loop

.7 Miles; 20 vertical ft

Take a leisurely stroll around the Snowshed Pond or pick up the pace for a great workout. This loop is a favorite of our guests, with several walking bridges and very little climbing necessary.

J Trail aka Summit

.2 miles; 200 vertical feet

Follow the stairs just off the top of the K-1 Gondola to this short and sweet trail which takes you to the top – 4241’ feet to be exact. This rocky vista is perfect for a picnic or just to take in the views of the Adirondack, Taconic, Green and White Mountain Ranges.

K Trail aka Idler

.7 miles; 290 vertical feet

This trail will take you on the most direct route from Snowshed base area to K-1 – right next to the road. It is wide and well-maintained, also serving as an access road for our trail maintenance staff on their ATVs.

S Trail

.38 Miles; 0 vertical feet

This is a connector trail from H Trail to the base of K-1, an important link in the hiking network.
