Killington Resort Conducts First Major Snowmaking Test Ahead of Winter 2026/27

KILLINGTON, Vt. (October 6, 2026) – Vermont’s Killington Resort, the largest ski and snowboard destination in Eastern North America, conducted its first major snowmaking test ahead of winter 2026/27 during a period of near-freezing temperatures on Tuesday, October 6. In total, Killington's snowmaking team operated six fan guns in three separate locations: four fan guns at the bottom of Superstar and two new SMI Super Puma fan guns on Mouse Trap and Lower Skyeburst, both of which were purchased and installed during this summer. The new fan guns are located in wide sections of the mountain where trails merge, areas that are traditionally more difficult to cover with snowmaking. For improved operational flexibility, both SMI Super Puma fan guns were installed on fully automated, hydraulically controlled swing arms that are each over 15' long, allowing for maximum throw and increased snowmaking coverage during variable wind conditions.

After further testing is conducted later this week, the resort is slated to be fully prepared to make snow whenever temperatures become optimal. Killington Resort does not have an estimated open date for winter 2026/27. Visit killington.com/conditions for future updates leading up to Opening Day.
